Diabetes in Cats

What is feline diabetes? > Related conditions

Cats with diabetes can develop other problems—usually after living with diabetes for a year or more—as a result of prolonged high blood glucose concentrations. Careful control of blood glucose concentrations will help minimize potential long-term complications.

Weakness of the hind legs is a potential long-term complication of feline diabetes. Persistently high blood glucose concentrations may damage nerves, resulting in weakness and muscle wasting, usually in the hind legs. Avoiding high blood glucose concentrations should help prevent or reduce the severity of hind limb weakness.
